The New Mutants reveals new TV spot

Month, as a new television ad for The New Mutants confirms that it still expects to hit theaters on August 28. In the years since the first trailer was released, The New Mutants has seen its release date pushed back multiple times for various reasons, with some jostling just a few weeks, while others have been months. We are currently three weeks away from its planned release, but with movie theaters around the world still closed in large part due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is unclear if there will be enough space to warrant a theatrical release.

When the first trailer was released in Fall 2017, The New Mutants had a release date of April 2018. Three months before that release date, it was pushed back 10 months to February 2019. released months earlier, audiences were shocked by the lengthy delay, though X-Men: Dark Phoenix also earned delays, making the timing of these two franchise films delayed more understandable to fans. Two months after that first delay was revealed, New Mutants was pushed once again to August 2019.

To complicate matters in 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which included New Mutants. After more than a year of fans waiting for updates on the project, it was announced in May 2019 that New Mutants would be moving to April 2020.

Still in March of this year, New Mutants was still scheduled for an April release, only for the coronavirus pandemic to have a catastrophic effect on the film industry. While social distancing and quarantine protocols saw productions of new projects on hold, these measures also caused movie theaters to close their doors as a number of highly anticipated films moved on to VOD releases rather than theatrical debuts.

Amid all the delays for New Mutants, fans were hoping that it could be released on a streaming service to end the long wait. Given that Disney had also acquired Hulu in its deal with Fox, and the film’s PG-13 rating, it seemed like an obvious opportunity to feature the film on the service, only for Disney to stick with its theatrical intentions.

US theaters are still largely closed at the time of this writing, although international markets have been able to contain the pandemic more effectively and resume normal operations. Drive-ins have seen an increase in attendance, although it seems unlikely that enough cinemas will open across the country in a matter of weeks for New Mutants to find open markets.
